F.H. Ayres produced some of the finest rocking horses of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Ayres was based at 111 Aldersgate, London, between 1864 and 1940. They were suppliers to both Harrods and Selfridges in London.
As well as producing fine bow rockers and safety stands, Ayres also produced some rarities.
THE F H AYRES SWIVEL HEAD
The patent for the Ayres swivel head dates to 1887. Only 5 of these rare horses have ever been found, and they are very rarely found for sale on the open market. There rarity means that they achieve the highest of prices. Achieved prices for swivel heads range between £10,000 and £20,000 depending on the size of the horse. Definately one for the serious collector!!
F H AYRES SPRING STAND
The patent for the spring stand dates to the early 1900s. Not many of the spring horse seem to have survived. The stands were not easy to repair and it is thought likely that many have had their stands replaced with the more usual swing stand.
