A little golly history
British jam manufacturer James Robertson & Sons used a character called Golly as its mascot from 1910, after John Robertson apparently saw children playing with golly rag dolls in America. Robertson's started producing promotional Golly badges in the 1920s, which could be obtained in exchange for tokens gained from their products.
The company used to give away golly badges or brooches making up different sets, musical, sports related, or other various themes. The golly badges were officially retired in 2001.
Golly badges are widely collected today.
