PECTINIDAE (SCALLOP SHELLS)
Class - Bivalvia
This family of shells with its characteristic fan shape are found world-wide in shallow and deep tropical waters.
There are several hundred species of the Pectindae family which is also known amongst collectors as the Pecten.
Scallop shells are often used as inspiration for artists. Examples of these designs can be found on many church doors and were often used to ornate old Roman lead coffins.
