A little history... The Tiffany style of shade was originally designed by Tiffany & Co. of New York. Charles Lewis Tiffany founded the company in 1837. They originally designed Jewellery.
It was actually his second son, Louis Comfort Tiffany (pictured right) that designed the first Tiffany shade. His idea behind it was to bring the beauty of church stained glass windows to the home. Subsequently his name became the name of the style of lamps he created, Tiffany Lamps.

The making of a Tiffany shade is a very time consuming process. They are still made using the same techniques that Louis Comfort Tiffany used when making the first one. This is why they appear expensive compared to other lamps of the same size, a lot of work and time goes into making each and every shade.

The following is a vague guide to making a Tiffany shade, just to give you an idea of what's involved.
1) Preparation - this includes cutting the glass pieces into the desired shapes and the making of a mould (pictured right) to hold the small pieces of glass while you construct the shade.
This is only possible if you are working from a plan, to design and construct one from scratch is extremely time consuming and a major project. |

2) Foiling - The pieces are wrapped in foil and set into their desired locations (pictured left).
This is in effect a "dry fit" which gives you the chance to change your shade before any pieces are fixed in place.
This will give you a glimpse of what your shade will look like complete. |

3) Soldering - The pieces are then fixed in place with heated lead solder (pictured right). There are plans to change this from lead to silver solder in the near future, but nothing has been implemented yet.
This is perhaps the most time consuming part of the construction... you have to take care if you want a nice shade at the end of it.
After this stage comes cleaning and reinforcing the shade, but as I said earlier this is only a basic guide and there is a lot of information left out. |
