Blank Media Policy
Firmware
Media
Returns
To provide this best value
on Blank Media RS Shop has adopted the below policy.
The failure rate of blank media is very rare. Hence it is unlike that a
disc is faulty.
Most problems with blank media are due to hardware and software
compatibility issues.
Hardware and software can on most occasions be corrected by firmware
updates. Please read info on firmware.
The software program used to burn media can also determine a sucessful
burn. For example may work fine with nero on your system but with
another software.
The variables that can affect the burning process are numerous, ie
being connected to internet or even having your screen saver on. Please
read my Top Tips list for successful recording.
To be able to provide best value on media we will only accept media
back if it is faulty, but not if is not compatable with your system.
To help determine if media is compatable RS Shop will try to list
smaller quanities such as 5's and 10's so you do not need to purchase a
full spindle of 50 or 100 only to find it is not compatable with your
system or player. Also we will try to list media in our try B4U Buy
section were you will be able to purchase a number of different media
in one listing.
What
is Firmware?
The firmware of a CD/DVD writer acts as the control centre for the
drives operations. It is a set of instructions to tell the hardware of
your burner how to recognize media, strategize the writing, at what
speed and how to read your media disc. Without the firmware your burner
does not know how to behave.
Why update firmware?
These updates are an improvement from the drive manufacturer to improve
quality of reading and burning and may also increase reading and
writing speed of the writer.
The biggest reason to update your firmware is to support newer media.
As new media becomes available, support for it is implemented in the
firmware. The firmware determines the best parameters for a piece of
media, and then continually monitors the burn process to ensure the
quality of the burn.
How often is firmware updated buy manufacturer? This
depends upon the burner, downloadable firmware upgrades may appear as
often as every month or as infrequently as once in a drives lifetime.
Which
manufactures are likely to keep their firmware updated?
The most proficient and expedient about firmware upgrades are the ones
that manufacture the drives themselves:
Such as AOpen, BenQ, LG Electronics, Lite-On, NEC, Pioneer, Plextor,
and Ricoh.
If your drive is not from one of those companies, then chances are the
company is "rebadging" drives, meaning that it's selling a retail
package of hardware that's manufactured by another company.
Among the re-badgers out there are companies such as Alera
Technologies, I/O Magic, Iomega, Memorex, Pacific Digital, and TDK. And
often, if a company doesn't make the drive itself, it tends to be less
diligent about providing firmware updates.
This procedure can irreversibly trash your drive if it goes wrong, so
don't attempt it unless the manufacturer recommends it.
Some new drives can be setup to update the firmware automatically via
Internet, this software would be provided with drive when purchased.
If I
update my firmware does this guarantee that all blank media will work?
There is no guarantee that updated firmware will cover all blank media.
However in most cases a firmware update resolves any blank media
issues.
All unopened
unused media is returnable within 7 days of receipt. Buyer is to pay
both postage for sending and returning, insured postage is advised for
returning.
Faulty media is returnable within 14 days of receipt. Please note if
media is not compatible with your system this does not make media
faulty, media will be tested on return. If found to be faulty return
postage and payment costs will be refunded in full. If discs are not
faulty then no refund will be issued and payment for return postage
will have to be paid to have discs returned.
This policy is in place to allow a fair return for faulty media and to
allow us to provide best possible prices on blank media for all.
