Binding Methods

There are three main ways of binding a document:

  • Comb Binding - flexible, cost effective and ideal for documents with varying numbers of pages
  • Wire Binding - creates a professional finish, ideal for documents with varying numbers of pages
  • Thermal Binding - secure, creates a book bound finish

Binding Methods - Comb Binding

Comb binding is a cost effective and simple way of binding documents. It is possible to comb bind documents up to 450 pages. The combs can be easily reopened allowing you to add or remove pages when you like.

  • Quick, simple and low cost
  • Widely available consumables
  • Documents can be opened and reassembled
  • Combs are flexible and durable and can be re-used
  • Suitable for documents up to 450 pages
  • Combs come in different diameters to suit the size of document - from 6mm to 30 pages and the largest is 50mm to 450 pages
  • The international standard is 21 holes on the long side of an A4 page
  • Create A5 or A4 Landscape documents by cutting the comb to size

Binding Methods - Wire Binding

This gives your document a professional finish. It is a more secure form of binding ideal for frequently used documents. Pages can not be removed without breaking the wire - making the document more secure.

  • Professional finish to documents
  • Secure and tamper resistant
  • Strong and flexible
  • Pages can rotate 360 degrees - ideal for photocopying
  • Suitable for documents up to 140 pages
  • Wire elements come in different diameters to suit the document size - from 5mm to 35 pages and the largest is 14mm - up to 140 pages
  • The international standard is 3:1 pitch (34 holes along the length of A4 pages)

Binding Methods - Thermal Binding

This is the most secure and durable form of binding, creating book-bound style documents and pages cannot be easily removed.

  • Professional book bound finish to documents
  • Quickest method of producing finished documents
  • Documents can be bound in batches
  • Secure and tamper resistant
  • No bulky element
  • Pages cannot be removed without destroying the document!
  • Suitable for documents up to 200 pages
  • Covers have different size spines depending on size of document
  • The smallest is 1.5mm - 15 pages
  • The largest is 20mm = 200 pages
