Dvd Regions Explained
Hi thanks for taking the
time to check the compatibility of my dvd’s with your dvd player
There are 8 different
regions 0 through to
7 and there are
3 main formats
-
PAL -
Phase Alternating Line -
The UK and Europe System
-
NTSC - National
Television System Committee
- The
USA, Canada and US Territories
-
SECAM - Sequential
Colour with Memory -
other parts of the world
Region 0 is an All Regions standard and these dvds will play in
the United Kingdom, Most of Europe and anywhere in the World
(provided the dvd player is
PAL formatted)
My dvds are either region 2 or region 0 & are in a PAL FORMAT
PAL formatted dvds will NOT play in a NTSC
dvd player regardless of the region.
(Its not quite as bad as the old VHS / Betamax non compatibility -
but you get the idea)
The USA, Canada and US Territories use the NTSC system. So
unless you have a multi region dvd player my dvds will not play.
Now like most things in life there are
always exceptions to the rule, and most home computers with a dvd drive can play
any dvd. It is also possible to play some dvds through game consuls -
To technical for me.
.
How does this affect
you?
If you are unsure if one of my dvd's will play in your system can
I suggest that you check your own dvd collection and look for the
info about format and regions on the case covers. If your got a dvd with
the same format and region in your collection which plays fine - then everything
should be OK
Many thanks
Glenn
