Abrasive Compound Kit
What is Abrasive Compound?
Abrasive compound is a mix of glue and abrasives and is graded by grit. The lower the grit number the coarser the abrasive so an 80 grit compound will remove lots of metal but give a poor finish.
This kit will allow you to take a piece of work in poor condition and through the process of several stages, starting with a low grit and ending with a high grit achieve a satin finish. Further polishing can then be done using a polishing kit to achieve the finish you desire.
Abrasives compound can be used with a large variety of mops and felts (not sisal mops)
IMPORTANT: Abrasive compounds dry out very quickly, Keep product sealed in an airtight container.
Preparation:
Before using the abrasive compound you must first prepare the mops. If you are using a drill we recommend you mount it in a vice, it will make coating the mops much easier.
1. Screw the mop onto arbour.
2. Switch on the machine then turn it off, apply the compound to the mop as it is slowing down, the mop takes on the compound quite slowly and this process will have to be repeated several times before the mop is completely coated.
3. Turn the machine on and let it run several minutes, this will help the drying process.
4. Repeat 2 & 3 till you have 1-2mm coating of abrasive on the mop. (Remember to add the compound when the machine is slowing down)
5. Remove the mop from the machine and allow to dry overnight (3-4 hours Minimum)
6. Mark the mops so you know which grade it is, don’t mix different grits on a mop.
Using the abrasive mops:
1. Make sure you are wearing the correct safety equipment (safety glasses, dust mask & gloves)
2. The surface to be worked on must be free of dirt or grease
3. Attach the 80grit mop to the arbour, make sure it is tightly fixed and start drill
4. Apply mop to the work piece and move across the scratches you want to remove.
5. Make sure you remove all the scratches any left will become more visible as the finish improves.
6. Repeat the process with the 150grit mop. You should remove the scratch pattern left by the 80grit mop and the surface should be slightly brighter
7. Again repeat the process with the 300grit mop, remember to polish across the pattern.
8. Once you have finished you may wish to polish the work with mops and compounds to a mirror finish.
Tips:
Use a different mop for each compound.
