Which Dog Food should I buy?

There are so may different types of dog food available to buy; that it can often be difficult to decide on a food that is suitable for your dog!

Our range of Complete Dog Foods has been produced to high nutritional standards. They contain an excellent balance of high quality ingredients such as human grade meat and non GM Cereals; and we also fortify all of our feeds with vitamins and minerals to ensure that your dog gets all of the nutrients he requires. All of our complete dog foods can be fed dry or moistened with warm water depending on your dog’s preference. If your dog prefers their food to be moist it would still be a good idea to try to keep at least one meal per day crunchy as this will help to control tartar build up

The following is a guide to some of our Complete Dog Foods and what you might need to consider when deciding on a food for your dog...

Puppies:
Newborn Puppies will receive all the nutrition that they need from their mother up until being about a month old. By around 8 weeks, the puppy will have teeth and should be fully weaned onto ‘crunchy’ food. See our Sweetheart Puppy Food or Premium Wheat Gluten Free Puppy Food.

Junior or Adult Dogs:
We have a range of foods that have been formulated for junior and adult dogs (typically 1-7 years of age).
Our best sellers seem to be Premium Chicken with RiceChicken with Rice, Lamb with Rice, Triple Mix and Rakers. us.

Overweight Dogs:
Firstly; ensure that you are not over feeding your dog. When considering a diet for your overweight dog; look very carefully at the contents and analysis of the food. Quite often ‘Lite’ diets may simply be lower in oil, and may have absolutely no nutritional difference when you compare it to a regular adult diet. An overweight dog still requires a balanced and nutritional diet, but you should look for something that is lower in fat and lower in carbohydrates. Look out for high fibre diets as this type of food will help your dog to maintain and sustain a feeling of fullness without feeling the need to beg. See our F-Plan Weight Control Dog Food.

Very Active Dogs:
Very active dogs such as hard worked working dogs will require a food that is higher in calories in order to maintain their energy levels. A very active dog for example, could require up to 50% more energy than a regular family pet dog. The majority of our foods contain high levels of meat and cereals to provide carbohydrates and protein for energy. I would recommend Premium Chicken with Rice (24%) or Gun Dog Rings (25%)

Senior Dogs:
Most dogs are considered to be senior at about 7 years of age, or 5 years of age for large or giant breeds. Senior dogs tend to be less active than they may have been in their younger days, so a diet that is lower in energy is a good idea. In addition, an older dog is likely to require less fat in their diet. Look for a food that is lower in carbohydrates, such as our Senior and Lite Diet.

Pregnant Dogs:
It is recommended that once a pregnancy has been diagnosed, you should change your pregnant bitch onto a puppy food, or another similar high energy food. This is because a pregnant bitch needs lots of extra nutrients to support the development of her litter. After giving birth, the bitch should be kept on the same diet at least until the puppies have been weaned. See our Sweetheart Puppy Food, Premium Chicken with Rice or Premium Wheat Gluten Free Puppy Food.

Giddy/Bouncy Dogs:
A lot of people make the mistake of blaming the protein level of a food for hyperactive/giddy behaviour. I think this is often not necessarily the cause of such problems and I would be more inclined to recommend a food that is free from colourants and artificial additives. Hnestly, if I could have a pound for the number of people who tell me they feed their dog  'the number one dog food in the UK', but they can't understand why it makes their dog so giddy (and loose); I would be very rich. Check out how many E Numbers and how much sugar you are giving your dog.... Want to avoid this now? see our Premium Chicken with Rice.

Large Breeds and Giant Dogs:
It is important that larger dogs are fed on a diet that is lower in energy in order to maintain a healthy weight.  See our Greyhound Maintenance or Senior and Lite Diet.
A large breed dog is classed as being around 25 - 50kg. i.e. a Labrador or German Shepherd.

A giant breed dog is any dog that will weigh around, or in excess of 50kg. i.e  a Great Dane.
Note- Some people also choose to supplement a larger dog’s diet with glucosamine, because larger dogs are more likely to suffer from joint stress, and glucosamine is known to promote healthy joint cartilage and mobility.

Wheat Gluten Intolerant Dogs:
We have a selection of feeds that are free from Wheat Gluten. This is the type of Gluten that is most associated with causing digestive upset. See our Premium Wheat Gluten Free Puppy Food, Premium Chicken with Rice, F-Plan Weight Control Food and our Senior and Lite Diet.

Rice Intolerant Dogs:
Greyhound Maintenance and Working Dog Triangles do not contain Rice.

Soya intolerant Dogs:
None of our dog food contains soya protein.

Dairy intolerant Dogs:
The only dog foods which contain dairy are Premium Wheat Gluten Puppy Food (contains milk)

Dogs requiring a more 'natural diet':
The following foods are free from all artificial additives. i.e. no colours, preservatives, flavour enhancers:
Premium Wheat Gluten Free Puppy Food, Premium Chicken with Rice,       F-Plan Weight Control Food and our Senior and Lite Diet.
