The first
thing to be
said is that
this is
NOT a
scientific
rating based
on
statistics.
My husband
spent some
30 years in
the Trade
and this is
just a
personal
'assessment'
based partly
on his
experience
combined
with, to
some extent,
current
internet
offers & any
other
relevant
factors we
are aware
of.
The family
still has
several
containers
full of
antique maps
& prints
that were
acquired
over the
years, so
occasionally
I am able to
offer more
than one of
a particular
item, from
the large
inventory
that still
remains to
be listed.
Prints are
the means by
which an
artist can
offer his
work to as
wide an
audience as
possible.
The
quantities
produced 100
years or
more ago
were but a
fraction of
those
published
today. I am
sometimes
asked how
many of a
particular
print may
still exist
- an
impossible
question !
There is no
way to know
how many
were
published
originally
nor how many
may have
been lost or
damaged over
the years.
So many
comparatively
common
antique
books, maps
or prints
are
described as
'rare', that
I have
attempted to
provide some
reasonable
perspective
on the use
of this and
similar
words.
Also,
I have noted
another
dealer
offering
prints/maps
on eBay and
elsewhere,
who says in
many of his
offers - I
quote: 'NOTE
there are
only one of
each as they
are the
original
page/s from
our copy and
not reprints
or modern
copies.'
I can but
assume they
mean that
they
only have 1
of the
prints/maps
concerned.
It would, of
course, be
quite wrong
to assume,
particularly
from the use
of the word
'there',
that their
offer was a
unique
one-off
item.
If you are
in any
doubt,
always write
to the
dealer for
clarification.
There does
sometimes
seem to be
confusion
over the use
of the word
ORIGINAL.
In my offers
this should
always be
taken to
mean simply
that it was
printed at
the date
stated.
I NEVER
offer modern
day
reproductions.
The rating
given to any
particular
item should
be regarded
as purely my
personal
view, not
as factual.
Others might
disagree !
