| This year, there’s a fascinating variety of looks to choose from including the frilly, feminine pink and bead trimmed tree, right through to rustic, using simple plaited straw, twigs and even painted seed pods.
The rustic look is popular with those who want to reject extravagant commercialism.
Piers Croke marketing director of Gisela Graham, specialist designers and suppliers of Christmas decorations to leading stores including Selfridges, says: “People are having fun with their trees and decorations these days, and want them to blend with the decor of their home rather than being a jarring addition for a few weeks.
“They are much more experimental and are looking for colours which suit a more contemporary setting and aren’t part of the traditional red, green, and gold palette.
“Pastels – soft green, pale pink and blue – for tree trimmings and decorative ribbons is a key look this season. It gives trees a soft, feminine and girlie appeal which we call the Bridget Jones look.”
He points out that nostalgia will never lose popularity. The traditional collection has ornaments inspired by Victorian engravings in white, red blue and green. These are complemented by gold and amber decorations using angels, doves, fruits and leaves.
