| The Alpaca is a domesticated species of camelid from South America. Alpacas are kept in herds that graze on the level heights of the Andes of Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern Chile. Alpacas are considerably smaller than llamas, and unlike them are not used as pack animals but are valued only for their fibre (wool). Alpaca fibre is used for making knitted and woven items, much as sheep's wool is, but it is much softer and far less itchy! It is a soft, lightweight, lustrous fibre, second only to silk for strength, comparable to cashmere for luxury and more durable than both. It is thermally efficient and does not pill like cashmere. |
