Hazel Valley Packaging Guide to Packaging

We all know how annoying it is after placing a bid on that "must have" item only to see it arrive damaged or in the worst cases smashed to bits because of inadequate packaging.

In response to customer emails asking our advice for the best way to pack items safely,-we decided to put together this handy guide to packaging to help answer a few of your questions.  Of course if you still require specific help or advice you are more than welcome to email us, telephone us on 01554 811117 or write to us at

White Acid Free Tissue Paper

When sending clothes, lingerie or other small items use white acid free tissue paper to wrap your items in.  It only takes a few more minutes to wrap your item carefully in acid free tissue paper and will create a much better impression of you and your packaging.  Acid free tissue paper will not harm clothing and can be used to safely protect even small fragile items.  White acid free tissue paper can be safely used to wrap many items, and is available in many different sizes.  When purchasing acid free tissue paper, try to choose the correct size for the items you will be packaging.  It is not easy to cut neatly, and can tear or rip easily.  It is better to use one large sheet and fold it over several times than it is to have tissue paper that is too small that you then have to add pieces too!

Of course white acid free tissue paper is not the only coloured tissue paper available.  There are also many different coloured tissue papers available, and it is nice to take the time and effort to package items thoughtfully by for example using cerise pink tissue paper for lingerie, womens clothing or girls items.  However if you are using coloured tissue paper, make sure that you purchase acid free tissue paper.  Ordinary tissue paper may stain, leach or mark clothes or other items, especially if it gets wet.

Mail Lite Protective Postal Bags and Jiffy bags (Padded envelopes)

Probably the most common form of packaging available today.  If you are looking for a lightweight cost effective way of sending items through the post then these type of protective postal bags or padded envelopes are hard to beat!  Mail Lite padded envelopes or Jiffy bags, are so practical, quick and easy to use.  Generally a label is stuck to the outside, or the recipients name and address is simply written on, the item is slipped into the envelope, the peel and seal strip covering is removed and the envelope lip is folded over and sealed.  Mail Lite envelopes and Jiffy bags come in a range of sizes, so there is always sure to be one size that will fit the item you wish to send.

However, did you know that there are actually different types of Jiffy Bags and Mail Lite padded envelopes.  For example in the Mail Lite range, there are at least two (and probably more) different types of padded envelopes.  There is the ordinary Mail Lite range which provides protection for most items with its protective bubble wrap inner and strong outer kraft paper covering, and there is also the Mail Lite Plus range which provides extra protection for heavier or more fragile items such as engineering parts, electronics, large parts, spares tools etc.  Jiffy also produce different types of postal bags, among these are:

Jiffy Padded Bag (Paper padding inside)

Jiffy say that the protection actually increases with use with this type of bag.  The recycled padding expands in the post for maximum cushioning and the double glued bottom flap offers extra security for heavier items.  These are a high performance bag that with care can be used again and again.

Jiffylite or Jiffy Airkraft bags

Previously known as the Jiffylite range, Jiffy have now renamed the range as Jiffy Airkraft.  Jiffy Airkraft are the lightest padded mailing bag in the Jiffy range.  They, like the Mail Lite padded envelopes have a tough kraft outer paper and a very lightweight bubble padded interior.  They are available in a wide range of sizes and are perfect for posting most items.

Jiffy Mailmiser

Jiffy Mailmisers have strong side welds, a tough kraft outer paper, and lightweight bubble padded interior and provide maximum protection for your items in transit.  Once again, these are available in a wide range of sizes.

Polythene Postage Bags

From experience we know that this type of polythene postage bag is becoming more popular and it's not hard to see why.  Lightweight and easy to use, they have been used by catalogue and mail order companies for many years as they provide a cheap, yet reliable way of sending items safely.  Many postage bags have a tamper proof peel and seal strip meaning that once the address has either been written onto the bag or a label has been stuck on and the bag has been sealed it is easily evident if the bag has been tampered with.  The bags have a high burst resistance and do not rip or tear easily, in fact they generally have to be cut open carefully when received.

As with most types of packaging, there are a few things to watch out for when purchasing this type of packaging.  We are pleased with the many positive comments and repeat buyers Hazel Valley packaging has for this product, (the postage bags that Hazel Valley Packaging provides are strong, robust and have an extra strong tamper proof peel and seal strip, and were manufactured especially for us to suit your needs best), and are pleased to present our own mini guide to polythene postage bags!

  • Opacity.  Make sure that the bags you purchase are opaque.  This means that they cannot be seen through, so once packed the contents cannot be seen.  Most postage bags are opaque however if you are in any doubt ask before you purchase.
  • Thickness of polythene used.  If you see these for sale and they are advertised as being 55 mu or above, these are generally thick enough and robust enough to stand our postage system!
  • Tamper proof peel and seal strip.  Make sure that the seal really is tamper proof.  On some postage bags the glue used for the strip isn't very adhesive.  If in doubt ask for a sample and test before you buy.

Everyone at Hazel Valley Packaging is pleased with the many positive comments and repeat buyers we have for this product, so do please contact us if you have any questions about this particular item.  A sample can be sent out on request, however to prevent abuse of this system, the bag will clearly be marked sample only.

Please note that Hazel Valley Packaging is in no way endorsing one type of packaging over another, and we will not be held responsible for breakages or damages incurred by you as a result of you following this guide.  (Further information and packaging guidelines, hints and tips can be found on the Royal Mail website).
