WOOL FLEECES from FORESTFIBRES

The fleece wool offered for sale in our eBay shop has been sourced and hand selected by ourselves.  We currently handle in excess of 150kg of fleeces each year; these are carefully washed and sorted to offer our customers the largest range of named British Breed fleece wool available in one shop.  Our fleeces are washed in warm water and liquid laundry detergent; no commercial scours are used on our wool.

The fleece wool we supply will be representative of the wool from a named breed.  If, like many of us, you have been used to working with wool tops, you will find using washed (or raw) wool a very different experience. As a natural product, the wool in every fleece will vary in both colour and texture.  Two fleeces from the same breed are rarely the same!

We wash all the fleece we send out, but you will still find some of the natural grease (lanolin) left in the wool.  This will help with the handspinning process; if you are going to dye or felt the wool we recommend you give the fleece a further wash.   The longwool fleeces, such as Wensleydale, Cotswold and Lincoln, naturally trap dirt in the long curls – any remaining after washing will usually drop out when carding or combing the wool before spinning.

Whether you are a handspinner or feltmaker, each of the different types of wool needs a particular method of preparation to bring out its best qualities.  It would not be possible here to give comprehensive instructions on how to prepare each fleece, but to give just two examples:

  • Soay sheep produce wool at only 2-3 cm long; card into rolags and spin very finely using the longdraw method.  Soay wool will produce a very soft yarn which can be used for laceweight shawls.
  • Wensleydale sheep produce wool up to 30cm long with a very distinctive curl; comb into a roving as it is far too long to card.  To hand spin Wensleydale, a shortdraw, worsted method is best.  Wensleydale wool is strong enough to be used as the warp yarn for weaving.

At ForestFibres, we have over 25 years of experience in working with wool and other natural fibres; we are happy to advise on most aspects of using our products.

There are also many excellent books available on handspinning and felting which will give detailed instructions and advice on how to work with different types of wool.  The internet has become an invaluable source of information for handspinners – several informative and entertaining  handspinning video clips can be found on YouTube.
