| | | | THIS MONTHS FEATURED ARTIST - FABULOUS FABIAN PEREZ!
Born in 1967, Fabian spent his youth growing up in and around Buenos Aires and found himself thrown into a less than conventional up bringing that was to shape and define his future forever.
His mother, Edua Herreria, was a beautiful Brazilian women who met and fell in love with his father, Antonio Perez, a handsome and charismatic ladies’ man. They married and lived in Campana, a small city outside Buenos Aires, where they had four children.
Fabian, the youngest of the four, became fascinated at an early age with painting and found himself drawn in particular to the human form, finding himself painting friends and family at every opportunity.
It is true to say that it was his Mother Edua who was the creative influence in Fabian’s life, but it was the lifestyle and persona of his father, Antonio, who was to become the inspiration for his work. Fabian witnessed his father’s unorthodox and often difficult life, portraying him in many of his paintings as “the cool guy” outside nightclubs and bordellos. Antonio owned a number of brothels and illegal nightclubs in Campana, and was frequently chased and closed down by the police. Nevertheless the young Fabian was constantly exposed to beautiful women who could seduce a man “simply by lighting a cigarette”. It is these images of Fabian's youth that were to become the foundations of his body of work.
Sadly Fabian was to lose his mother at an early age and three years later his father followed. Devastated by the loss, he found himself lost and lonely. It was not until 1984 that he was to find some peace and reconciliation once again in the form of - Sensei Oscar - the greatest inspiration of his life and who was to become his teacher, master, close friend, and father figure.
In 1987 Fabian set off on a journey that was to last until the present day. After six months in Rio he took up residence in Padova, near Venice, where he stayed for seven years, studying with Oscar and painting daily before moving on to Okinawa, Japan. He then moved to America, settling in Los Angeles. By day he did remenial jobs including busboy, modelling and ran odd jobs for Universal Studios. By night he painted prolifically and considers this period in his life to be the most creative so far.
In 2001 two art publishers and gallery owners saw and fell in love with an exhibition of Fabian’s work. So enthused by what they had seen, they quickly arranged a meeting with him and two days later formed a partnership to promote his work. The collaboration was to prove an overwhelming success; every painting Fabian created was sold immediately and the demand for his work exploded.
You only have to spend five minutes in front of a Perez painting to understand why. Always powerful and evocative, it is his ability to blend dark, brooding and quite often seedy scenarios with such affection and love that makes his work so intriguing. You find yourself drawn in to his world and identifying with his characters. You find yourself pondering questions like:- Why do they seem to look so distant? What is it that is on their mind? It is this ability of his subjects to touch and engage you, that makes Perez's work more than just a painting. The more you gaze upon them the more you see. They make you think...make you question....make you wonder...make you surmise...make you hypothesize.....but probably most of all, they make you feel a part of them.
Fabian himself characterizes his work and style simply as the passionate expression of his strong romantic feelings.........
He now resides in Beverly Hills, California, where he plays soccer, trains and teaches martial arts to friends........and of course paints. |
