AnDel Models

Hello, and thank you for viewing my shop.

Please feel free to view the 'About My Models' and 'About Me' pages for more information.

The models that I produce are made from resin (not the stuff from trees!), I use polyurethane and, occasionally, polyester. These materials are 2-component liquid plastic, although the name used throughout descriptions is resin. All rolling stock is supplied with wheels, and couplings. Kits can be supplied without wheels (axles only) and couplings, if required. Please contact me directly to discuss this.

General Interest

This is a brief overview of how my models are conceived and developed, from drafting to prototype.

All my models are freelance in design, but some have been inspired by real-life prototypes. I try to include scaling, details of the openings or other specific features in my models to make them as close to the prototype as possible. I have chosen not to create scale-models of specific narrow gauge railways, as this can limit the viewing pleasure to an individual's railway. All designs are drawn out, using traditional methods, as can be seen in the photograph.

I produce my models completely out of resin (and not the stuff from trees), a 2-component liquid plastic. The reasons for this are the long-term durability of the model when outside (depending on paints chosen), as well as the detail that can be included on the moulding. I discovered these advantages when experimenting with durable and detailed models on my own garden railway, after a very cold winter damaged the wooden models I had left in the shed. I have found that, by spending time manufacturing in resin, I am able to get a higher degree of detail on the models whilst maintaining the consistency of the look, compared with a wooden model.

All models come complete, including wheels and couplings, as part of the kit. I also offer free postage on all models, therefore the price you see is a complete price for the model or kit purchased. However, the painting is not included, as each individual will have their own 'Company Colours'. All models are available with pre-coloured resin to simplify the paitning, and these can be requested at the time of purchase. currently, These are brown, blue and green.

I have been modelling for many years, and the interest started with planes. As a young boy, I had many trial-and-error attempts at scale drawings, as well as plan and kit building, to hone the skills I am now using. The last aeroplane design that I produced (which flew) was a couple of years ago. It can be seen in the accompanying picture, in front of my wife's baby Iguana, in it's skeletal form.

Designing model aeroplanes as a teenager taught me my draftsman skills, and allowed me to discover a passion for scratch-building that I was able to transferto other aspects of modelling.

As a young man, I worked for a local company making headlamps from plastics. Several years after I left that particular line of work, I found myself again moulding plastics, implementing and improving on the methods I had used previously.

Fortunately for me, my wife's grandfather was an engineer, and I was left most of his hand tools and machinery when he passed away. These have proved invaluable to me as I furthered my interests in model making.

Additionally, I was fortunate enough that my wife's uncle, Graham Ashby of the Kent Area Group, is also a keen member of the 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers. I have been able to discuss various ideas with him, and a number of the features of my models have been developed due to his input and support. My thanks to him for his time and effort.

At present I am able to offer rolling stock, in both SM32 and SM45 16mm gauge, on a short wheelbase. These are mainly available in kit form, to allow the buyer to have the pleaseure of builiding the model, with some ready-built models available on an ad hoc basis.

My current project is the colliery hutch carrier and Glyn Valley Tramway range of coaches for both gauges. I hope to have these available sometime in early Spring 2008. However, I became the proud father of a beutiful baby girl in early April, and this has set back the release slightly. Nonetheless, I am still working away, at least when I'm not being distracted by her!

Future plans include a range of models using medium and long wheel bases, plus a range of bogey wagons and coaches.

Eventually, I would like to expand my modelling to include goods for wagons, buildings and even, possibly, aeroplanes to cover all areas of interest to me. That would be some time into the future, although I look forward to the challenges.

I still enjoy tinkering with my own models, and have even re-designed one of my Roundhouse steam engines in the past. Perhaps my modelling and tinkering will take me in the direction of locomotives as well?

I cannot thank my wife enough for the time and support she puts in helping me (especially as she is doing all the typing!) and the help she has given throughout recent circumstance. We have justy had a baby girl, and my only apology to her is that she will be introduced to modelling from a young age. She is already has a range of 'train' clothing, and I'm hoping to interest her in my garden layout through the Summer, weather permitting.
