SOFT SHELL A wet body loses heat at up to twenty times the rate of a dry body. Effective removal of moisture from the skin is therefore essential, not only to personal comfort, but also health and safety.
When you are outdoors creating heat and sweating, highly breathable clothing designed to
encourage moisture movement to the outside of your clothing system is usually preferable to a hard shell, semi-permeable clothing system which aims to prevent moisture entering in the first place.
Most of the products in this website are within this category - lightweight and soft shell.
HARD SHELL There are situations, however, where the traditional hard shell concept still has a worthy place. During periods of relatively low activity - stopping for lunch, injured, waiting for a friend - and it is raining heavily; it is ideal to pull on fully waterproof, lightweight and breathable clothing which will allow a certain amount of residual moisture to leave your clothing whilst preventing any further entering.
There is huge debate in outdoor circles about the relative merits of soft and hard shell clothing, even what is soft and hard shell clothing.
At MONTANE we prefer not to be too dogmatic. We say there is a place for both and that in choosing your clothing you must be guided by what you and the weather will most probably be doing and simply ask yourself what will make me most comfortable and keep me safe?
In most situations the answer will be a pragmatic blend of lightweight soft shell clothing which will be worn 95% of the time, with an optional lightweight hard shell when necessary or in the event of emergency.
Please note that our opinion is only a guide. Your clothing system should be uniquely designed around you and your personal needs, past experiences and independent advice. We make every effort to ensure the accuracy of this website; however we do pursue a policy of continuous and immediate improvement and reserve the right to change product specifications without prior notice.
