What is Batik?
Batik is an ancient art, practised for centuries in Indonesia. This wonderful technique is achieved by covering areas of fabric with melted beeswax and paraffin. The wax can be applied by various methods including pouring, brushing or stamping and the fabric is then dipped in dye. The areas which are covered in wax will resist the dye so that when the wax is removed either with solvent or by ironing between paper towels, a beautiful and unique pattern and colour will be revealed. The process can be repeated for a multi-coloured or layered effect pattern. |
